Please Develop an AI Policy - NOW



This question is coming - if it hasn't hit you already.


And here's the catch: most of us struggle to understand the intricacies of AI, let alone possess the depth of knowledge it would require for us to generate policy around its use within our organization! But, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept in banking—it’s already here, transforming everything from customer service and fraud detection to credit scoring and investment advice. And, as AI systems become more deeply embedded in core operations, banks face a growing challenge: how to manage these tools responsibly and in alignment with regulatory, ethical, and reputational standards.


Despite the promise AI holds, many financial institutions still lack formal policies governing its use. That absence is a risk. Without clearly defined frameworks, banks leave themselves vulnerable to regulatory penalties, reputational damage, and operational inefficiencies.


AI Policy = Guardrails for Trust and Transparency

Trust is the foundation of the financial system. If customers can’t trust a bank to treat their data responsibly or to make fair and explainable decisions, that trust erodes quickly. Without internal guidelines and transparency mechanisms, banks may not be able to explain or justify these decisions, exposing themselves to legal and ethical risks.


AI policies help ensure that:

  • Sensitive data is protected

  • Human oversight is built into high-stakes decisions


Regulators Are Watching Closely

Global regulators are moving quickly to define AI governance standards. In the EU, the AI Act proposes strict requirements for high-risk AI systems, including those used in credit scoring. U.S. agencies like the CFPB and OCC have also signaled their intent to hold banks accountable for the AI systems they deploy, particularly in consumer finance and lending.


Banks that don’t develop internal policies now may soon find themselves playing catch-up—or worse, facing compliance violations. Proactively implementing governance around AI usage signals readiness and responsibility to regulators.


Clear Policies Drive Safer, Smarter Innovation

Ironically, having strong AI governance doesn’t stifle innovation—it accelerates it. When teams across compliance, IT, risk, and product development understand the guardrails, they can develop and deploy AI solutions with greater speed and confidence.


A good policy outlines:

  • Use-case approval processes

  • Data governance and privacy rules

  • Model validation and risk assessment protocols

  • Ongoing monitoring and incident response

These elements help create a culture where AI is not just used—but used wisely and consistently.
